Korkyra was the daughter of the River god Asopos and the nymph Metope.

As the story goes, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph, kidnapped her and brought her to a hitherto unnamed island and offered her name to the place: Korkyra or Kerkyra (modern Corfu). Together they had a child Phaiax after whom the inhabitants of the island, Phaiakes, were named.
